http://www.zulucom.co.za/images/stories/newsletter/june2010_uncapped.jpgUncapped ADSL price drop!
In April I sent out a special newsletter announcing our uncapped ADSL offerings backed by Internet Solutions. Well in the IT game things move fast, so here is an update - we have managed to reduce prices!. From 1st June 2010 our Basic uncapped services are priced as follows; (prices are quoted incl of VAT)

  • 384k line speed; R240,00 pm
  • 512k line speed; R350,00 pm. (This is a new service - there is no longer a ‘gap’).
  • 4096k line speed; R560,00 pm

So if you are already an uncapped ADSL user you will have seen a price reduction as of June 2010. And if you are a regular ADSL user on a capped account you might like to consider one of the uncapped options above. Uncapped means never running out and getting blocked, although it is ‘shaped, so is not the same high quality service supplied by the capped offerings. Just the same, for the small office and home user uncapped has proven to be a good option and most of our users who have switched are very happy with the uncapped option.

http://www.zulucom.co.za/images/stories/newsletter/june2010_opendns.jpgNeed to manage internet abuse? Enter Open DNS
Many clients who operate small to medium businesses have asked us about ways to manage abuse of internet access by their staff. Until now this has been difficult to solve, in most cases requiring one to install and setup router hardware and software - another cost and workload for the already busy business owner.

Open DNS offers you control of what websites your staff can access for a small monthly fee without any hardware installation. There are standard settings which block Facebook, Youtube, porn etc., in all 5 levels from no limits to blocking all non-business websites. There is even an option called ‘whitelisting’, where you can list ONLY the websites that staff can visit - nothing else. As mentioned there is no hardware needed and the service can be customised by remote access. Registration is cost-effective and is based on a per user bsasis. If this is of interest to you please contact us.

http://www.zulucom.co.za/images/stories/newsletter/june2010_npo.jpgSpecial non-profit hosting rates
Zulucom has always supported NPOs (non-profit organisations) by offering a hosting discount of 35%. We aren’t always aware who is a not-for-profit organisation so you may be hosted with us yet be paying the full rate. If you are an NPO and host with Zulucom please contact us to check that you are receiving the discounted rate. Easiest way to do this is to e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Oh, and just to confirm our support of NPOs, we will be increasing our discount to 50% as of 1st July 2010!.

http://www.zulucom.co.za/images/stories/newsletter/june2010_loans.jpgIn closing - Beware short term loans
Whether it’s from your bank or insurance company, many of us will have received flyers in the post offering us a ‘Personal loan’. This might be tempting - times are tight, you need money for house repairs, or a child’s education, or even a holiday. Before you sign, read the fine print. Thanks to FICA financial bodies now have to declare the terms and all costs, and once you read what you have to repay you will be shocked!.

I have a promotional flyer in my hands from my life insurer offering me a personal loan of up to R50 000 and it looks tempting - the problem is paying it back. They state that interest rates will be between 19% and 26% - this is around the rate credit cards charge overdue accounts. The result is that a simple R10 000 loan over 5 years will eventually cost a total of R24 198. Yes, you read that right, 2 ½ times the basic loan. And this is not some loan shark on the corner asking me to surrender my bank card to him - this is a well-known, major insurance company. Bottom line; Unless you really, really have to, don’t take out loans - they will hurt you. And if you really, really have to, read the details and then decide - unless you want to make the banks richer and yourself poorer.

From the team at Zulucom till our next newsletter,

Keep well,

Chris King
